چکیده

The Fer-de-lance or terciopelo (Bothrops asper) inhabits a wide range of environmental conditions and habitats across Central America. While much information on the species is based anecdotal observations useum specimens, data collected under natural are more limited. To better document its history, this study sought to determine habitat use age structure B. asper in Quebrada Gonzalez sector Braulio Carrillo National Park, Costa Rica. Snake surveys were conducted from January 2015 August 2017 used evaluate population age-class distribution sex ratio. macrohabitat use, four types (mature forest, late succession, early human infrastructure). Microhabitat was determined by recording several structural variables at each snake location random sites. Amphibians sampled type available prey base. Fifty-five individuals captured, mostly females juveniles, with five recaptures. Snakes encountered all but most often succession forests, which have dense vegetation cover high availability. selected areas heavy understory when resting, exposed sites, closer bodies water, ambushing moving. Human-disturbed sites least. Although encounters did tend correlate higher amphibian abundance, other factors such as mammalian abundance could also influence distribution.

Natural history of the terciopelo Bothrops asper (Serpentes: Viperidae) in Costa Rica.

The terciopelo Bothrops asper is the only lancehead species widely distributed in the humid lowlands of Middle America and northwestern South America. Its large body size, relative abundance and cryptic habits contribute to the high incidence of snakebites induced by this species throughout its distribution. The terciopelo plays an important role in ecosystems, both as prey and as a generalist ...

First record of Porocephalus cf. clavatus (Pentastomida: Porocephalida) as a parasite on Bothrops asper (Squamata: Viperidae) in Costa Rica.

Pentastomids are parasites that infect respiratory cavities of vertebrates, they are pretty common but poorly known in wildlife veterinary. A Bothrops asper snake (Garman, 1884) was captured in the Caribbean region of Costa Rica and had its lung infested with pentastomids, identified as ca Porocephalus clavatus (Wyman, 1845). This represents the first record of Porocephalus (Humboldt, 1812) on ...

Phylogeography of the Central American lancehead Bothrops asper (SERPENTES: VIPERIDAE)

The uplift and final connection of the Central American land bridge is considered the major event that allowed biotic exchange between vertebrate lineages of northern and southern origin in the New World. However, given the complex tectonics that shaped Middle America, there is still substantial controversy over details of this geographical reconnection, and its role in determining biogeographi...

Habitat features influencing jaguar Panthera onca (Carnivora: Felidae) occupancy in Tortuguero National Park, Costa Rica.

Habitat characteristics and human activities are known to play a major role in the occupancy of jaguars Panthera onca across their range, however the key variables influencing jaguar distribution in Tortuguero National Park, Costa Rica, have yet to be identified. This study evaluated jaguar occupancy in Tortuguero National Park and the surrounding area. Jaguar detection/non-detection data was c...

Pharmacokinetic Modeling of Fer-de-Lance Envenomation

Bothrops asper is the most dangerous poisonous snake in Southern Mexico and Central America. Its venom is known to produce myonecrosis. The myotoxins present in the venom penetrate muscle cells altering ionic transport through the sarcoplasmic reticulum membrane causing an increase in the flow of calcium into the sarcoplasm resulting in a calcium overload. This calcium overload leads to phospho...
